PU vs Epoxy Surfboard Repairs – Why It Matters

The most important thing when repairing a surfboard is using the correct repair kit for your board construction.

PU (Polyurethane) Surfboards
Traditional fibreglass surfboards are usually made with a polyurethane foam core and polyester resin. These boards require polyester repair resin or PU-specific repair kits.

Epoxy Surfboards
Epoxy boards use EPS foam cores with epoxy resin construction. These boards must only be repaired using epoxy resin. Polyester resin will melt and destroy EPS foam cores, so using the wrong repair kit can make the damage far worse.

Softboards
Softboards and foam surfboards often require different repair methods depending on the construction. Many modern softboards still contain epoxy cores internally, while others use foam skins and slick bottoms that may need specialist adhesives or patches.

When Ding Tape Makes More Sense

For travelling surfers, waterproof ding tape is one of the smartest things you can carry. While it’s not designed as a permanent repair, it creates a temporary waterproof seal over cracks and dings so you can keep surfing until a proper repair is possible.

Ding tape is especially useful:

  • On surf trips abroad
  • For emergency repairs between sessions
  • When travelling and unable to fully repair a board
  • To stop water entering the board immediately
  • For protecting small rail cracks or travel dings

Most experienced surfers keep waterproof repair tape permanently in their board bag or travel kit because even a tiny crack can let surprising amounts of water into a board.
