They provide a barrier between the inside of a kayak and the elements outside, keeping your lower half dry and warm but also stopping water from getting in during a capsize to aid rolling. They come in nylon construction for recreational paddling or in neoprene construction for the more extreme disciplines where a tight fitting deck is essential.
