Top 3 Reasons We Love This
1. A really solid everyday surf leash from FCS — nothing overly
complicated, just dependable construction from one of the biggest
names in surf hardware
2. The 7mm cord is a good all-round thickness, giving you plenty of
strength for everyday conditions and waves from around 2-8ft
3. This is FCS's more straightforward, entry-level leash — spend
more further up the range and you'll get slightly nicer cuffs and
additional features, but if you just want a good quality leash that
does the job, the Classic makes loads of sense
Product Description
The FCS All Round Classic 7ft Surfboard Leash is a
dependable everyday leash designed for day-to-day surfing
across a really wide range of conditions.
This sits towards the more straightforward end of the FCS leash range. You're not paying for all the refinements found on their more expensive models, but you're still getting the important bits done properly: an engineered polyurethane cord, quality swivels, a comfortable neoprene ankle cuff and a proper rail saver.
The 7mm cord gives you a good balance between strength and everyday usability, with FCS recommending the leash for waves from approximately 2ft through to 8ft.
At 7ft long, it's particularly well suited to mid-lengths, bigger shortboards and boards around the 7ft mark. As a general rule, you want your leash to be approximately the same length as your surfboard or slightly longer rather than significantly shorter.
If you're simply after a good quality, sensibly priced FCS leash and aren't particularly worried about having the latest premium cuff or weight-saving features, we'd happily go with the Classic.

What Boards Is The 7ft Leash For?
A 7ft leash is primarily going to suit surfboards around
7ft in length.
That includes loads of mid-lengths, bigger hybrids, funboards and larger shortboards. It can also work on a slightly shorter board if you'd rather have a little additional leash length.
The basic rule we'd use is that your leash should generally be at least around the length of your board. You don't want a leash that's considerably shorter than the surfboard, particularly on boards with a longer nose.
What Does The 7mm Cord Mean?
The 7mm measurement refers to the thickness of the polyurethane
leash cord.
A thinner competition-style leash creates slightly less drag, but you sacrifice some strength. A thicker cord gives you more confidence as the waves get bigger.
7mm is a really sensible all-round thickness. It's substantial enough for normal everyday surfing without becoming unnecessarily heavy or bulky.
That's reflected in FCS rating this leash for waves from approximately 2-8ft.
Where Does The Classic Sit In The FCS
Range?
The Classic is essentially the straightforward, entry-level
option in the FCS leash range.
That's not to say it's a cheap throwaway leash. You're still buying FCS hardware with a quality polyurethane cord, proper swivels and a comfortable neoprene cuff.
Move further up the FCS range and you'll generally find more refined cuffs, improved comfort, lower-profile components and other performance-focused details.
If you surf loads and really appreciate those little refinements, spending more can be worthwhile. If you just want a solid leash from a brand you trust, the Classic is difficult to argue with.
Why A Rail Saver Matters
The rail saver is the wider webbing section connecting the leash to
your board's leash plug.
Rather than having the thin leash cord pulling directly against the edge of your surfboard, the wider section helps spread the load across a larger area.
It's a simple but important part of any decent surf leash and helps reduce the chance of the leash damaging the tail of your board when it's under load.
Expert Advice
You don't necessarily need to buy the most expensive leash in the
shop.
The FCS Classic is what we'd recommend to someone who says, "I just want a decent leash that's going to do the job." It's simple, proven and made by a company that knows surf hardware inside out.
The 7mm cord also makes this a much better everyday option than going for an ultra-thin competition leash purely because it's lighter.
If you're surfing several times a week and want the nicest cuff and more refined hardware, have a look at the more expensive FCS models. For the majority of surfers wanting good quality without spending unnecessarily, the Classic is a really sensible choice.
Q & A
Q: What size surfboard is the 7ft FCS Classic leash
for?
A: We'd primarily recommend it for boards around 7ft long,
including mid-lengths, funboards, hybrids and larger
shortboards.
Q: Can I use a 7ft leash on a shorter
surfboard?
A: Yes. Having a leash slightly longer than your board generally
isn't a problem, although you may prefer a shorter leash on a much
smaller board to reduce unnecessary cord in the water.
Q: How thick is the cord?
A: The FCS Classic uses a 7mm polyurethane cord.
Q: What size waves is it designed for?
A: FCS recommends it for waves from approximately 2-8ft.
Q: Is this an entry-level FCS leash?
A: Yes. We'd describe the Classic as the straightforward entry
point into the FCS leash range. It's still a good quality leash,
but the more expensive FCS models add more refined features and
components.
Q: Is 7mm a good everyday leash thickness?
A: Yes. That's exactly why we like it. A 7mm cord provides a good
balance of strength and everyday usability without going
unnecessarily heavy.
Q: Should my leash be the same length as my
surfboard?
A: As a general rule, we'd choose a leash that's approximately the
same length as your board or slightly longer rather than
significantly shorter.
Q: Why would I spend more on another FCS
leash?
A: Moving further up the range generally gets you nicer comfort and
performance details, such as more refined cuffs and lower-profile
components. If you surf regularly you may appreciate those
improvements, but they aren't essential for everyone.
Q: Is this a good first surfboard leash?
A: Absolutely. We'd much rather start with a straightforward leash
from an established surf hardware brand like FCS than go for an
unknown cheap option. The Classic gives you the essentials without
pushing the price up with features you may not need.
