Top 3 Reasons We Love This
1. A really solid everyday shortboard leash — simple, dependable
and made by one of the biggest names in surf hardware
2. The 6ft length and 7mm cord make this a great all-round
combination for everyday shortboard surfing rather than an
ultra-thin competition setup
3. This is FCS's more straightforward leash option — spend more
further up the range for slightly nicer cuffs and additional
refinements, but if you just want a good quality leash that does
the job, the Classic makes loads of sense
Product Description
The FCS All Round Classic 6ft Surfboard Leash is a
dependable everyday leash designed primarily for
shortboards and boards around the 6ft mark.
This sits towards the more straightforward end of the FCS leash range. You don't get all the refinements of their more expensive models, but you're still getting the important bits done properly: an engineered polyurethane cord, quality swivels, comfortable neoprene ankle cuff and proper rail saver.
The 7mm cord is what makes this the All Round rather than a lightweight competition leash. It gives you a good balance between strength and drag, with FCS recommending it for waves from approximately 2ft through to 8ft.
At 6ft long, it's the size we'd look at for most conventional shortboards around 5'6" to 6'0", along with plenty of fishes, grovellers and hybrids. As a general rule, you want your leash to be roughly the same length as your board or slightly longer rather than significantly shorter.

What Boards Is The 6ft Leash For?
The 6ft Classic is primarily aimed at shortboards and other
boards around 6ft long.
For most surfers, we'd happily pair it with boards from roughly 5'6" through to 6'0". It can also work with slightly shorter boards where you'd rather have a little additional leash length.
If your board starts getting significantly longer than 6ft, we'd generally move up to the 7ft version rather than using a leash that's substantially shorter than the board.
What Does The 7mm Cord Mean?
The 7mm measurement refers to the thickness of the polyurethane
leash cord.
Thinner competition leashes reduce a little weight and drag, but they also sacrifice some strength. The Classic's 7mm cord is designed as a proper everyday all-rounder, giving you more confidence when conditions get bigger or more powerful.
That's why we'd choose this over an ultra-thin comp leash for someone who simply wants one dependable leash for most of their surfing.
6ft or 7ft Leash?
For a normal shortboard around 6ft, choose the 6ft
leash. It keeps unnecessary cord length down and is the
standard choice for most shortboard setups.
Once you're riding boards closer to 7ft — particularly bigger hybrids, funboards and mid-lengths — we'd move to the 7ft version.
A simple rule is to choose a leash that's approximately the same length as your surfboard or slightly longer.
Where Does The Classic Sit In The FCS
Range?
The Classic is essentially the straightforward entry point
into the FCS leash range.
That doesn't mean it's a cheap throwaway leash. You're still getting FCS construction, an engineered polyurethane cord, stainless steel and brass swivels and a comfortable neoprene cuff.
Move further up the FCS range and you'll find more refined cuffs, lower-profile components and additional comfort and performance features.
If you're surfing loads and appreciate those little refinements, spending more can be worthwhile. If you simply want a solid quality leash from a brand you trust, the Classic is a really sensible option.
Why A Rail Saver Matters
The rail saver is the wider webbing section connecting the leash to
your board's leash plug.
Rather than having the thinner leash cord pulling directly against the edge of your surfboard, the wider section helps spread the load over a larger area and helps protect the tail of your board when the leash comes under tension.
Expert Advice
For most shortboard surfers, a 6ft x 7mm leash is about as
useful an everyday setup as you can get.
You could go thinner with a competition leash, but unless you're specifically chasing minimum drag and weight, we'd rather have the extra reassurance of the 7mm All Round cord for normal day-to-day surfing.
The Classic is also a good example of where you don't necessarily need the most expensive option in the range. If you want the nicest cuff and latest FCS leash features, look further up the range. If you just want a good quality FCS leash that's suitable for loads of conditions, this is the one.
Q & A
Q: What size surfboard is the 6ft FCS Classic leash
for?
A: We'd primarily recommend it for shortboards around 6ft long. As
a rough guide, it's a great option for many boards from
approximately 5'6" to 6'0".
Q: Can I use it on a 5'8" shortboard?
A: Yes. A 6ft leash is a really common choice for a 5'8" shortboard
and gives you slightly more leash length than the board itself.
Q: Can I use it on a board longer than 6ft?
A: We generally prefer a leash that's at least around the length of
the board. If you're riding something significantly over 6ft, we'd
look at the 7ft version instead.
Q: How thick is the leash?
A: The All Round Classic uses a 7mm polyurethane cord.
Q: What size waves is it designed for?
A: FCS recommends the leash for waves from approximately 2-8ft.
Q: Why choose 7mm instead of a thinner competition
leash?
A: A 7mm cord gives you a more substantial everyday leash.
Competition leashes can reduce weight and drag slightly, but the
All Round is the option we'd choose when reliability across a broad
range of conditions matters more.
Q: Is this an entry-level FCS leash?
A: Yes. The Classic is one of the more straightforward options in
the FCS range. More expensive models offer additional refinements,
but the Classic gives you the important features at a sensible
price.
Q: Is this a good first surfboard leash?
A: Absolutely. If you've got a shortboard around 6ft and just want
a dependable leash from an established surf hardware brand, it's a
really easy recommendation.
