Top 3 Reasons We Love These
1. A really useful pair of Small quad rears for lighter surfers or
anyone wanting to loosen up an existing FCS II quad setup
2. The Performer is FCS's balanced all-round style, making these a
sensible choice when you want a mixture of speed, control and
manoeuvrability rather than an extreme fin feel
3. Buying the rear fins separately lets you experiment with front
and rear combinations and genuinely fine-tune how much hold and
release you get through the tail
Product Description
The FCS II Performer PC Small Quad Rear Fins are a pair of smaller
rear fins designed to complete or fine-tune an FCS II quad
setup.
The Performer sits in the balanced, versatile part of the FCS range. Rather than pushing heavily towards maximum hold or an extremely loose feel, it's designed to provide a useful combination of speed, control and responsiveness.
In this Small quad-rear size, the fins make particular sense for lighter surfers, smaller boards or anyone deliberately looking to reduce the amount of rear-fin influence in their quad setup.
That last point is important. Quad rear fins might be considerably smaller than the front fins, but they can make a very noticeable difference to how the tail behaves. Going smaller at the rear can help free the board up, making it easier to redirect and release through turns.
These are quad rear fins only, so the set contains the two smaller rear fins rather than all four fins required for a complete quad setup.

What Exactly Are Quad Rear Fins?
A quad setup uses four fins: two larger fins at the front and two
smaller fins behind them.
The front fins provide much of the drive and hold, while the smaller rear fins help control what happens through the back of the board.
These FCS Performer fins are that smaller rear pair. They aren't a complete quad set, so you'll need suitable front fins as well.
If you already have front fins you like, buying quad rears separately can be a great way of turning a five-fin board from its normal thruster configuration into a quad without buying another complete set of fins.
Why Choose Small Quad Rears?
Small quad rears reduce the amount of fin area working at the back
of the board.
For a lighter surfer, that can be important because excessively large rear fins may provide more resistance than they actually need. The board can start to feel too planted or difficult to release.
Small rears allow the tail to feel freer and more responsive while still giving you the additional control of a four-fin setup.
They're also useful as a deliberate tuning option. Even if you aren't particularly light, you might choose Small rears because your current quad feels too stiff or tracky and you want to loosen it up.
What Does The Performer Template Feel Like?
The Performer is designed as an all-round performance template.
Within the wider FCS range you'll find fins that place more emphasis on characteristics such as hold, drawn-out turns or quick pivoting. The Performer is designed to sit more centrally, balancing those characteristics rather than taking the setup too far in one direction.
That makes loads of sense for a quad rear because it gives you a versatile starting point for experimenting with different front fins and different boards.
What Does Changing The Rear Fin Size Actually
Do?
This is one of the most useful things to understand when tuning a
quad.
Smaller rear fins generally reduce hold and allow the tail to release more easily. The board can feel quicker to redirect and less locked into its line.
Larger rear fins generally increase hold and support. They can make the board feel more secure at speed and give a heavier or more powerful surfer more fin to push against.
Neither is automatically better. You're simply changing the balance between freedom and control.
Who Should Choose Small Quad Rears?
We'd first look towards the Small size for lighter surfers who
simply don't need as much rear-fin area.
They're also worth considering on smaller performance boards where you want to maintain a lively, responsive feel.
But surfer size isn't the whole story. If you're an average-sized surfer with a quad that feels overly planted, moving to a smaller rear fin can be a really effective way of freeing the board up without changing the front fins.
Likewise, a very powerful surfer may find the Small rears too easy to overpower and prefer stepping up to a larger rear fin for additional support.
Quad vs Thruster
If your board has five FCS II boxes, changing between quad and
thruster setups can dramatically alter how it feels.
A conventional thruster uses three similarly proportioned fins, with the centre fin creating a predictable pivot point through the middle of the tail.
A quad removes that centre fin and puts two smaller fins closer to the rails instead. This can produce a really fast, drivey feeling, particularly when the board is being surfed on rail.
We'd generally describe a thruster as predictable and controlled, while a quad can feel faster and more free-flowing down the line.
Why Can A Quad Feel So Fast?
One of the attractions of a quad is that there's no conventional
centre fin directly behind the tail creating drag through the
middle.
Instead, you've got four fins positioned closer to the rails. This can give the board loads of grip when it's on rail while allowing it to carry speed extremely well down the line.
That's why quads can be so much fun in fast, lined-up waves where maintaining speed through sections is important.
What Front Fins Can I Use?
You'll need a suitable pair of FCS II side fins to act as the
larger front fins.
If you've already got an FCS II thruster set that works well for you, the two side fins from that set can be a sensible starting point on a compatible five-fin board.
Keep those front fins the same and experiment with the Performer Small rears. This is actually a better way to understand fin tuning because you're changing just one element of the setup.
If the board becomes noticeably freer through the tail, you'll know that's coming from the smaller rear fins rather than wondering which of four completely new fins caused the difference.
Performance Core Construction
FCS Performance Core is a performance-oriented construction
designed to deliver a responsive flex pattern while keeping weight
down.
Compared with basic moulded fins, Performance Core gives you a more refined feel under load and is a proper upgrade for surfers who are starting to pay attention to what their fins are doing through turns.
For an all-round Performer template, Performance Core is a particularly sensible combination because you're getting a responsive construction without turning the fin into an excessively specialised option.
Are These Only For Small Surfers?
No. The Small sizing describes the amount of rear-fin influence
you're getting, and surfer weight is only one reason for choosing
it.
A lighter surfer is the obvious candidate because they generally require less fin area for support.
But a heavier surfer could deliberately use Small rears to loosen a board that otherwise feels too stiff, particularly when combined with larger or more powerful front fins.
Equally, if you're very powerful through your back foot and regularly feel the tail sliding when you don't want it to, we'd look towards a larger rear size instead.
Expert Advice
Quad rear fins are one of those bits of surf equipment that are
easy to overlook, but they're actually a brilliant tuning tool.
If you've got a quad you already like but it feels just a little too locked in, we'd try smaller rear fins before changing the entire setup. Keeping your existing front fins and fitting these Small Performer rears reduces rear-fin influence while leaving the main driving fins unchanged.
For a lighter surfer, they're also a logical starting point because there's little benefit in carrying around more fin area than you can comfortably overpower through a turn.
If you make the change and suddenly find the board too loose or lacking confidence at speed, you've probably gone too small at the rear. Step back up in rear-fin size and you'll generally bring some of that hold and stability back.
That's really the key with quad tuning: smaller rears for more freedom and release, larger rears for more hold and support.
Q & A
Q: What do I get with the FCS II Performer Small Quad
Rears?
A: You get a pair of Small rear fins for an FCS II quad setup. The
two larger front fins are not included.
Q: Who should choose Small quad rear fins?
A: They're particularly suitable for lighter surfers and smaller
boards, but they're also useful for anyone deliberately wanting to
loosen an existing quad setup.
Q: What difference will smaller rear fins
make?
A: They generally reduce rear-fin influence, allowing the tail to
feel freer and making it easier to redirect or release the board
through turns.
Q: What if my quad already feels too loose?
A: We'd look towards larger rear fins rather than going smaller.
More rear-fin area will generally increase hold and support through
the tail.
Q: Can I use the side fins from my thruster set as quad
fronts?
A: On many compatible five-fin FCS II boards, yes. Keeping front
fins you already know and adding dedicated quad rears is a great
way to experiment with a quad setup.
Q: What is the Performer template designed to
do?
A: Performer is an all-round performance template, designed to
provide a balanced mixture of speed, control and manoeuvrability
rather than pushing heavily towards one particular
characteristic.
Q: What is Performance Core?
A: Performance Core is a lightweight performance construction
designed to provide a responsive flex pattern and a more refined
feel than basic moulded fins.
Q: Are these a complete quad fin set?
A: No. These are the two smaller rear fins only. You'll need two
suitable front fins to create a complete four-fin setup.
Q: Will these fit Futures fin boxes?
A: No. These fins are designed specifically for the FCS II fin
system.
