Product Description
The FCS II Album Twin + 1 S-M is the smaller version of this performance-focused twin-fin setup, combining two substantial side fins with a much smaller centre trailer.

The idea is simple: keep the speed, acceleration and freedom that makes a twin fin so much fun, then use the small centre fin to add a little more control when you need it.

Compared with running a pure twin, the trailer helps settle the tail through harder turns and gives you more confidence when the waves get steeper or you're putting more pressure through the back foot.

This Small / Medium version is particularly interesting for lighter surfers. You get the same Twin + 1 concept without having to overpower a larger set of fins, making it easier to redirect the board and release through turns.

What Is A Twin + 1 Setup?
A Twin + 1 uses two large twin fins with a much smaller centre trailer positioned behind them.

It might look like a three-fin setup, but it isn't intended to behave like a conventional thruster. The two large side fins remain the dominant fins and provide most of the speed and drive.

The little centre fin then gives the tail an additional point of control, helping the board hold through turns without completely removing the loose, free feeling of a twin.

It's a really nice middle ground for surfers who love twin fins but occasionally find a pure twin a little too loose.

Why Choose The S-M Version?
This is the Small / Medium version of the Album Twin + 1 and is the one we'd look towards for lighter surfers or anyone who wants the fins to feel easier to overpower through turns.

More fin area generally gives you additional hold and drive, but that isn't automatically better. If you're lighter, an unnecessarily large twin fin can make the board harder to turn and leave it feeling more locked in than intended.

The S-M allows lighter surfers to get the benefits of the Album template while retaining the loose and responsive character you'd expect from a performance twin.

If you're a bigger or more powerful surfer, we'd look towards the M-L version for the additional fin area and hold.

Why Add The Small Centre Fin?
A pure twin can be incredibly fast, but the lack of a centre fin is also responsible for its loose feeling through the tail.

That's brilliant in smaller waves and when you want the board to feel free, but it can become harder to control when you're pushing through a powerful bottom turn or surfing a steeper section.

The Album's centre trailer adds a little extra hold without dominating the setup.

You still get that immediate twin-fin speed, but the tail feels slightly more planted and predictable when you start pushing harder.

Twin + 1 vs A Normal Thruster
Although there are three fins, this shouldn't be confused with a conventional thruster setup.

A thruster uses three relatively similar-sized fins, with the centre fin playing a major role in the way the board turns and holds.

The Album uses two much larger twin fins and a considerably smaller trailer. The emphasis remains firmly on the side fins, giving you more of the speed and free-flowing character associated with a twin.

If you've spent years riding thrusters and want to experiment with a twin, a Twin + 1 can actually be a really nice stepping stone because you retain some familiar control through the centre fin.

Album Twin + 1 vs Album Keel
The Album Keel and Album Twin + 1 are both designed around modern twin-fin surfing, but they produce different sensations.

The Album Keel retains more of the traditional keel influence, giving you loads of drive, speed and a flowing feel while still turning considerably better than a big old-school keel.

The Album Twin + 1 moves further towards performance surfing. You've got big side fins generating speed, but the little centre trailer adds control when you're surfing more vertically or pushing harder through turns.

Performance Glass Construction
FCS Performance Glass fins are machine cut from layers of solid fibreglass, producing a relatively stiff and responsive fin.

The benefit is particularly noticeable when you're putting significant pressure through the fins. Rather than excessively flexing away, Performance Glass gives you a solid and predictable platform to push against.

It's one of the constructions we'd look towards for an experienced surfer who wants a direct, responsive feel from their fins.

What Does S-M Mean?
FCS now uses S-M, M-L and L-XL categories across its Specialty Fin range.

Previously many of these specialist twin and keel templates were simply labelled XL, which wasn't particularly useful when trying to compare completely different fin shapes.

This set sits in the Small / Medium category. Remember that specialty fin sizing doesn't translate directly to conventional thruster sizing, so we'd also consider your board, surfing style and the amount of hold you want when choosing between sizes.

What Boards Are These For?
We'd primarily recommend the Album Twin + 1 for modern performance twins and boards specifically designed to accept a Twin + 1 setup.

Your board needs two compatible FCS II side boxes plus a centre box if you want to run the complete three-fin configuration.

If your board only has two fin boxes, you won't be able to use the centre trailer.

Expert Advice
The S-M version makes loads of sense if you're a lighter surfer and don't want a massive twin-fin template overpowering the board.

It's also worth experimenting with the centre trailer. Ride the board as a pure twin and then surf the same board with the trailer installed. You'll normally notice the tail feels a little more settled and controlled with that third fin in place.

For smaller, softer surf you might prefer the freedom of the pure twin. When the waves get steeper or you want to push harder, adding the trailer can give you that extra bit of confidence.
